Whilst it was a unique experience having a sauna in a cave and the mineral hot pools were magnificent, I felt it was overpriced for such a small place in relation to the other offerings of the other spas. It was also quite a hike given other costs to get there. Nevertheless a unique experience indeed
There are three things that you must do while in Ischia, and the Castelo Aragonese, as wonderful as it is, doesn’t even make this list. The three musts are: visit Poseidon, eat at Pietratorcia, and visit Cavascura. The location is beautiful, with caves carved right into the cliff side, the mud application is a blast, the waters are very nice (could serve to get hotter and colder but still excellent), they also serve delicious granite and/or fresh squeezed orange juice for only 5 euro apiece, and large bottles of water for only 2 euro.
Easiest way to get here is to take the bus to Maronti beach, from which it is a short (15 min) and easy walk. If coming from the west you’ll need to take a water taxi to get around the cliffs that protrude into the ocean just before Maronti beach.
Totally worth the experience ! Was unsure at first due to pictures, but in real life this place is so beautiful !
Had full mud, sauna and thermal bath. Felt wonderful towards my muscle aches.
Recommend to go there early. Taxi boat from St. Angelo.
First day we walked from St Angelo and it was a very challenging 20min walk ! 😅😱 very happy for the taxi boat on the way back
It was next to the place where I was staying so I decided to try one day when the weather was not very good for the beach. Not overcrowded (maybe because it is a beginning of October), quiet, nice location and surroundings. Receptionist who speaks English and is quite nice. I had an hour of massage and a bath for extra 20 euro that could be included in the price I think. Overall not bad experience and I recommend if you stay nearby.
Amazing experience, possibly best and most natural spa experience you can get… just like the Romans did it!
The system of caves, canals and baths was built-in the rocks 2000years ago, they harvested a hot spring and managed the water temperature as required… just like they do now! It’s amazing to think that water comes out of the mountain like that (you can actually see the river head and the reservoir they built to manage the flow) and just as amazing to think that the Romans figured out the best way to harness it! And after a few hours in there, you’ll feel week rejuvenated 😌
Cavascura is a very interesting experience. They offer packages including masks and massages. We took the basic hot bath in a stone tub, which was very relaxing. The sauna cave was good as well. The place is very small, so it gets crowded quickly. When we visited, it was luckily nearly empty.
We took a boat ride from San Angelo to get there. To return, you have to wait at a designated pickup spot at the beach. The waiting time was about 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can also walk from San Angelo.
Pro's: relaxed, nature, special place, friendly, exotic, some speak English
Con's: bit expensive, certain thing are on a timer, small
Went on a really hot and sunny day. Took the 35€ deal, that included a bath, Turkish sauna, full body clay and chair to relax on with a parasol. Had to wait about 20 minutes before a place was available (come on time if you don't want to wait a bit). Fruit drink with ice cost 5€, that is also fine.
If you arrive in porto Ischia, buy a day bus ticket and take bus #5 that goes to Monsanti and exit at the final stop, you'll have to walk around 15 minutes via the beach, including a large steep part in order to reach the place.
All in all, please visit this. Paying with card is possible. Internet is quite slow here.
If you want an authentic thermal experience on Ischia, this is the place. From Sant’ Angelo we took the water taxi to the Cava Scura stop and then had a short walk (very well marked). There is a slight hill to walk to once you get close, but most everyone can make it taking their time. For 38 euro (per person) we got unlimited sauna and thermal cold shower (they recommend you go back and forth between those two 5 times), full body mud treatment, & 20 minutes in the thermal bath. You also get lounge chairs & there is towel rental for 2 euro if you need it. They sell water and juice too. The staff was very friendly and walked us through the process. Spoke enough English to help us out. I thought it was well worth the price to experience this place that has been used in some form since the Middle Ages. Our skin was glowing when we left!
